Developing ideas

My first thoughts on a few ideas is to go along the womans fashion style of magazine.
I thought that this could relate to me well as I read these kind of magazines quite often.

  • Fashion Photography.

- I have contacted the model and tv presenter and now Anna Fowler, via her fashion photography Facebook page. I frequently look through her images on her site and once, when looking through these, this is when I thought that some of these images would be suitable for me to work with for an idea on my layouts.
I wrote her an email, explaining what it was I was doing and also letting her know where these images would go and what I would use them for in the future, I got a reply a day later from her sister Lucy, who handles Anna Fowlers' bookings and enquiries, just saying that she is currently on holiday and will forward my email and shall get back to me with a response as soon as she can.
After getting an email back I am really looking forward to what Anna decides. I find her work fascinating, I have never particularly been that interested in this kind of photography, after doing Photography in A Level, but the beauty, make up and poses in her work is what I love.

- I have also contacted the photography Luke Woodford. I have followed his work on his Facebook site for quite a while, as I really like the surroundings in which he takes his images. They seem to be based on a kind of fashion photography, but I find the whole images more interesting rather than the actual models sometimes. Although they are usually what makes the images that little more feeling of 'finished' I really like to look beyond this in his works. I like the way that he edits his photographs too, they have a sinister feel, but look so beautiful with this.

I am going to go on to InDesign and just play around with a few layouts. I am not sure what magazines I am going to base my measurements of my magazine layouts on just yet. After doing the creative review layouts in a previous project, I might try that size again as I feel I got on really well with those dimensions. But I am going to buy a few magazines in the coming week from various shops, and going by the size of the pages, thats the way I will decide what I would like to base my layouts on.

Topics/Themes

For my double page spreads I have thought about what I want to do with them. I have been given the choice on whether I would like them all to link together as a continuing piece, or make them separate.. I think I would like to make all the topics for each double page spread different, I think that this would make it more interesting for me to make, it will let me choose different ways of making the layouts.

just a few topics that I have come up with for first thoughts are:
  • fashions
    - cloth in culture
    -photographers - Anna Fowler photopraphy
-tutorials on, step by step guides on... make up, shopping, dating, getting fit, getting that dream job etc.
    -photography
  • Cities
    -city breaks
-recommendations - hotels, countries, restaurants, places, museums
    -seasons
-ROME, NY, PARIS, LONDON, MADRID, BARCELONA, VENICE
    -romance/fun/shopping/beach/friends/site seeing/hotels/fame/shows
  • London
    -a tour for tourists
    -little look at london/Little London
    -London with Love
-- I wanted to just show a few parts of london that I love, for example; Covent garden, the culture, the entertainers, the shops and resturants.
  • Work experience
-I am doing work experience over the summer at Love it! Magazine and I was thinking of making a DPS about my time there, like a report. I have seen in magazines previously about peoples experiences and I think that this would work we..
    -Take photos of:
      -my journey
      -my workstation
      -the building
-office walls - they have magazine covers all over the walls

Brief

Here is the summer brief that I have been given. From moving home and being on holiday for a week I am very much looking forward to getting back into some work now.

Over the summer please complete four double-page spreads about any topic(s) that you like. They can be about the same topic or different ones.

You should use some of your own imagery and wording, but can supplement this with found images and texts. Please make sure that you reference this clearly in your sketchbook or within the spreads as appropriate.

You should get your format for the page measurements from a magazine of your choice and then present the spreads as mock ups within the magazine. No A sizes will be accepted!

You should regard these spreads as portfolio pieces.

Assessment
While the module may be assessed as a portfolio towards the end of the second year, there will NOT be further opportunities to develop or improve this specific project so you should be careful to present the spreads as professionally as possible.

We expect sketchbooks with this work.

Over the summer you may submit PDFs or the spreads, or work in development to get tutor feedback. You will have ONE opportunity only to do this.

Specific Learning Outcomes
Please refer to the Module Guide on Moodle for specific learning outcomes against which you will be assessed. Please make sure that you allow yourself opportunities to present evidence of having achieved these in your sketchbooks and final pieces.

This is a module based in typography, so please make sure that you use appropriate elements in your design.
