When designing I like to make a few thumb nails on paper before I start to make them on InDesign, this gives me a few looks in how I can design, these may or may not work when put on screen so this is just a few different ways in which I can progress.
Here I have just put together a quick idea about photo placing and text. I have thought of titles that I would like to use and that I tohught would work well with the images that I have from the photographer.
The titles that I have come up with are (in above image of thumbnails):
- the ugly truth
- the beautiful truth
- the ugly duckling
- birds of a feather
- feather fever - do you have;
- the four yous
- Luke Woodford
These titles I have based on a fashion theme. These images that I have from Luke Woodford are so beautiful and they seem so natural and bare with the colouring that I would like it to be a dps that has natural colours, simple but not so simple that there is nothing to see and read on the page.
The image that I have here is from Luke Woodford
The font I have used here is called Dubiel Plain (downloaded after doing research about what fonts have been or are being used in GLAMOUR mag)
Now I am going to set up my page from my GLAMOUR measurements and save this doc so that I can work from here. I am going to show a few ideas as I go along to try out different titles and layout ideas.
I set up the InDesign document with these measurements, with 2 columns. I chose to try out with 2 columns here because after doing a small experiment above with three, I feel that by using 2, it would give the DPS more of 'GLAMOUR' feel to it as looking through both magazines, it depends on what kind of article is on the page, on a high street fashion or make up page, it is more of a diagram page, where the writing seems to be where it needs to be to suit the explanation of the product. If it is more of a report or slightly more high fashion the page is slightly more simple, being careful not to overcrowd a page too much.
These are the first parts of my design coming along. I have used Dubiel Plain again here as I think that it fits really well with the imagery, an elegant feel.
Here I have just put in some placeholder text to see what the dps would look like with 2 columns of text. I really like the way it looks here at the moment, I am still going to develop this layout, and I am in the process of writing an article my self for this piece.
After writing my article I have decided to change the title of this dps. I have chosen to change it to 'have that Fairytale frock'. I did this because I wanted to write the article more about a general guide on how to get a dream wedding dress rather than just a feather wedding dress. I think that now I have completed my article that I made the right decision in change it. This is my article:

Dreaming of THE DRESS? Your perfect day looming? Well read on for
advice on where to get the most important part of your day!
Here
you are, searching and searching for inspiration for the dress of
your dreams; running out of wedding magazines to rip pages out of to
put into the ‘big day’ folder.. Here we are to give you more
ideas on finding ‘the one’. We were all in awe of the Sex and the
City character Carrie Bradshaw trying on those beautiful Vera Wang
dresses, and while we all wish we were able to experience that
moment, there is another way of achieving your dream - but with a
budget!
From
the photoshop with Luke Woodford, the designer Suzie Turner with her
Couture collection is something of a dream, with lace being intwined
within a mane of feathers is so elegant and graceful. Suzie Turner
has a shop based in Brighton, Sussex, tailoring making dresses to
your figure with every detail stitched and sewn to perfection.
Some
of us are lucky enough to have friends who can be fancy with a sewing
machine, so get them involved! This could be a perfect opportunity to
keep the wedding personal and close, also getting opinions that
matter to you most. Best of all... they will be more than happy to
help so costs will be kept to a minimum!
A
friend of ours here at Glamour was a
brave lady, buying a second hand dress off of eBay for 99p! She says
‘I was lucky, it turned out ten times better than what I ever
imagined!’ When the dress arrived, she was straight to the
seamstress where it was pinned and poked to make the dress look brand
new. The costs? The 99p, P&P and seamstress! Personalised and
cheap, just make sure you have the time to get this just right.
Alternatively
for a little more expense, if you are willing to spend the next years
‘home decorating’ fund then of course, you can get it hand made
by a professional. This will inevitably get you your dream dress but
this could all add up very quickly – so try suggesting to the
seamstress that you are willing to buy your own materials, this
should help with costs, like before, make sure you give your self
enough time before the big day if this is the route you would like to
take for the big day dress!
After
all of this... all of you GLAMOURous ladies have yourselves a lovely
day with your man.

Here is a development screen shot of my dps. I feel that it is coming along really well. I have put a quote in the middle of the page to make it look slightly more interesting.
After making this DPS I have swapped ideas with a friend from college about their ideas and we had a small discussion. She told me she was making 4 DPS that are from the same magazine. I didn't think of doing this as an idea and thought that this could work really well along side this DPS.
I decided that I would like to do a 'mini mag' that you would get inside a magazine such as Glamour. I found one in Marie claire that I can relate to in this DPS. This is a Boden advertisment, with more sturdy paper. But what I would like to do with this idea is to use that idea within the 'wedding season' for a wedding magazine.
I am going to use it before this page, as an introductory page for the 'mini mag'
My final typefaces I have used are:
I have used :
-Dubiel - 58pt and 78.5pt (Heading page 1), 20pt and 48pt (Heading page 2) and 14.768pt (quote page 2)
-Dubiel italic - 99 pt (Heading)
-Gill Sans - Light - 9pt (article)
-Helvetica Neue - UltraLight - 11pt (Sub heading page 2)
-Bebas - 12pt (Wedding style header)
I have downloaded Dubiel as I looked around for a long time trying to find a typeface that worked well with Glamour and the images that I have. I really like this typeface as I find that it can instantly make a page look sophisticated and quite dramatic too. This goes for the Italic version of the font too.
It was made by David Rakowski.
